Congratulations on your Engagement!
Your wedding ceremony is a unique and special occasion, and the music you select can greatly enhance the beauty of the event. But it doesn't need to be difficult! St. John Neumann Music Ministry has put together this quick guide to help make your wedding ceremony the most memorable part of your day - without a lot of headaches!
Here are some simple tips on arranging music for your wedding:
- During your engagement, make note of songs you both enjoy at church or at other weddings you've attended. You may want to ask special family members or friends for their input.
- Review the Wedding Music Worksheet that lists the parts of the Mass where music is usually used. Don't worry if you need help filling in the blanks! It's common for couples to rely on the advice of their musicians.
- Most of your music should be religious selections, although they can be traditional or contemporary in style (or a combo of both). Certain classic popular songs can also be appropriate. (Examples: One Hand, One Heart; All I Ask of You; The Rose; The Prayer.)
- Contact and select a singer and musician. (Your priest or deacon can help make suggestions.) Arrange a meeting either by phone or in person to discuss music choices. Your musician can make recommendations, but be sure to communicate any requests. Your wedding is your day! If your father or grandmother has a favorite piece, don't be afraid to mention it. Your church musician will help you determine if the selections are appropriate for Mass.
- Once you've determined the agenda, be sure to keep a copy of your musical selections. It will be helpful when the time comes to prepare your ceremony booklet.
